In order to raise awareness of flood related natural disaster, BKPC arranged for demonstration of warning sirens on 10th August 2007 targeted to the communities closer to the River from the projects head works to tailrace. There are two types of sirens one each for Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) warning system and spillway opening in the event of tunnel closer. The GLOF warning system consists of two sensor stations at Friendship Bridge at Kodari border. In the event of GLOF these sensors will transmit warning to other sirens installed in the downstream of the river including at Headworks, at Hindi Village and warning cum monitoring station at the powerhouse. Estimated time for GLOF to reach to head works from Friendship Bridge is five minutes. Likewise, spillway warning system is controlled from the powerhouse as well as from the head works. Warning sirens are played in the event of spillway opening that result in sudden flash flood. In both cases, for safety purposes the communities [read: all concerned] are advised to keep away at least 20 m above the normal river bed level. Warning signs were installed at four different river crossing approaches as suggested by the local community members who actively participated in the event.
