We, at Bhote Koshi Power Company Private Limited, define and understand our Corporate Social responsibility as:

"Corporate social responsibility is our business practice - of doing ethical business, being competitive and progressive, becoming an effective change agent in the business and the society we operate in, and adding value to entire stakeholder ecosystem that our business is part of."


Our approach to corporate social responsibility goes beyond the regulatory compliances to adopting internationally recognized best practices in all spheres of our business activities and promoting private led development. In this endeavor the company has an established system of responding to the dynamics of business to development and ensuring the equilibrium of the triple bottom line that is expected of any business.

While the systems in place ensure that the economic and environmental concerns are taken care of, the social aspects call for special attention. It is also because needs, priorities and capacities of individuals in a society differ from one another. In order to maintain the social cohesion it is imperative that no one in the society is excluded from deriving equitable benefi ts of development.

I. Activities in the past

Working in this context, since its establishment in 1997, your company has invested over NRs 31 million in various initiatives targeted to improve social and economic infrastructure in the 10 village development communities (VDCs) in the project corridor. The company has provided support to 93 organizations including community based organizations [CBOs], public institutions and line agencies of Sindhupalchowk district in the following sectors. In total around 175 activities in the area were supported.

Activities supported were in the fi eld of education by providing aid in the construction of school building, educational material and teacher support, in the fi eld of health by conducting medical camps and providing medicines and vaccinations.

The Company assisted in construction of roads and repair of a bridge in the area, provision of irrigation facilities, drinking water and installation of various communication equipments. The Company participated in the action plan of community forests by providing training and seedlings and assisted in the construction of public toilets and dumping site for garbage disposal. Various awareness raising programs were undertaken, capacity building trainings were imparted and disaster mitigation and advance warning systems were installed. Awareness was also created in the areas of women traffi cking and child sexual abuse.

The company also assisted in the construction of club building and playgrounds in the project corridor, made available various sports material and sponsored tournaments.

Cash crops were distributed for plantation in the forests. Company also provided assistance in the construction of a temple in the project area, repair and renovation of monasteries, conduct of various cultural programs, conduct of food programs and income generating support activities for deprived communities like supply of sewing machines, construction of homes for old and disabled people and release of various species of fish in the river.

II. Activities scheduled for this year: Skill transfer and technical support

Supporting the local development activities, by making fi nancial contributions, has been an inherent part of BKPC's business. From April 2006, the company has been exploring the areas of improvement in social development and the following are some specific initiatives planned for this year in this area:


.The company will introduce the private public partnership [PPP] approach to improve access of the project corridor communities to essential public services such as healthcare and education.
.The company will facilitate the planned development process in the project corridor. Development plans of all 10 VDC's will be prepared, in an inclusive and participatory manner, in partnerships with the VDCs, line agencies and other stakeholders to understand the needs, priorities and capacities thereof.
.The company will conduct need based training courses in computer applications for school teachers and students alike
